NB! In 2012, the Norwegian Skating Festival will be held on the Næra-lake, 15 km north of Moelv. Click on “map” to the left for directions.
The area stretching a few kilometers north and south of Biri and Moelv, has proven to hold the safest ice on the lake Mjøsa. Thus Moelv is a natural choice as the base of the skating festival.
The 2010 oval measuring 10 km, started at Skibladnerbrygga, Moelv, headed north under the Mjøsa bridge and turned south along the western shore. Then crossing the lake towards the eastern bank at Ringsaker continuing in a northbound direction back to start.
The very character of the race will be to alternate start and finish to parts of the lake where the ice is solid, and where the conditions allow for a best possible race. The intercity distance Lillehammer-Gjøvik-Hamar is the ultimate track when solid ice.
The Mjøsa oval as a permanent track
The aim is to keep the track open during 4-6 winter weeks in order to use the great winter product through a longer winter period. Thus the locals and the tourists can experience the spectacular winter atmosphere on the lake.
Under the photo’s, you can see a video about the ice.
